KALPITIYA
Kalpitiya is a small town on the north west side of Sri Lanka. It sits on the finger of land that separates Dutch Bay from the Indian Ocean. Kalpitiya Beach is a fantastic stretch of sand and it’s really with golden soft sand as far as your eyes can see with many local fishermen.
THE SEASON
There are two seasons for kitesurfing in Sri Lanka:
- The high season where wind speed is averaging between 17 to 25 knots lasts from May to September – the wind blows towards southwest and it’s steady, and significant wind fluctuations are quite rare.
- The low season wind speed is averaging between 15 to 20 knots lasts from December to March, the wind blows towards northwest.
The air temperature is averaging around 28 deg C all year long and water temperature is 26 deg C. Usually November and April are rainy, with no wind and are poorly suited for kitesurfing.
THE SPOT
Kalpitiya has became the best kite destination in Asia, during winter and summer. The lagoon is a huge flat spot with strong and consistent wind and it’s perfect for learning and at the same time perfect for medium and advanced riders. The Lagoon is quiet large area and can accommodate easily up to 50 kiters without feeling too crowded.
